Dr. Frank Schmid is Gen Re’s Chief Technology Officer, responsible for leading the IT Department and advancing the company’s AI strategy. He holds a doctorate in economics from Leuphana University of Lüneburg, where he also served as an extraordinary professor. His previous roles include positions at AIG, the National Council on Compensation Insurance, and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. He has taught finance and economics in Europe and Asia-Pacific and received the Hicks-Tinbergen Award from the European Economic Association in 2006, jointly with Gary Gorton of Yale University. He has published many papers at the intersection of AI and insurance.

The lecture will start with a high-level view of technology adoption in insurance before narrowing in on specifics—ultimately focusing on Gen AI adoption at Gen Re. The lecture will cover how re/insurers approach technology decisions, what re/insurers currently have in place, and where re/insurers are heading for.
